Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam recently entertained and wowed its audience at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
Unlike some Cirque story lines, Quidam is a story that you can follow. A young Zoe is bored, her parents distant and ignore her. Her life has lost all meaning as she seeks to fill the void of her mere existence. Then it happens, she finds herself in an imaginary world – the world of Quidam where she meets characters who encourage her to free her soul. Zoe is met by a mysterious, headless figure with an umbrella who hands her a bowler hat, Zoe then slips into the universe of Quidam.
The show was slow starting out however created momentum quickly. As its engines kicked in the audience was entertained to fantastic performances from jugglers to acrobats as the accuracy of their performance was amazing. The audience was marveled by their precision and execution with their cheering and applause.
The aerial contortionist performed by a woman in nude leotards wrapped herself in red silk while performing aerial acrobatics while intertwined. The act is very emotional and sensual. The vision is of a struggle as the music begins slowly. At the end of the song the performer lets loose and reaches her climax. During her act you witness her mother looking at her wondering about her child’s struggle. The contortionist hanging on to two strands of silk suddenly spins to the ground only to catch herself with the silk fabric.
Two other contortionists brought the audience to the edge of their chairs as Jerome lifted and carried Asa as they were entwined together until they appeared as one unit.
As usual with Cirque shows the funny clown provided some good humour between acts when he invited a young lady from the audience on stage and they sat on chairs as if in a car going on a date. The clown’s motions were hilarious as he was attempting to feel her up getting friskier by the minute.
During another interlude he invited three people on stage performing a play as he was filming a love scene. He gave them their part, when they would do it wrong he’d imitate and make fun of them. . very funny.
In the end, this French Canadian circus franchise captured its San Jose audience with Quidam; simply a spectacular, artistic and entertaining event. Nothing can diminish the brilliance of some of its acts.
The music, costumes, lighting and the sheer skill from the gymnasts is incredible. It\'s a show sure to get you excited as it will entertain and wow you. Definitely a must see. If you missed the recent San Jose show, you can catch Quidam at the Cow Palace from April 6-17, get your tickets, they will sell quickly.
I’ll leave you with a warning; if you don\'t want to risk embarrassment, don\'t sit down in the front or make eye contact with the clowns. It could be you sitting next to that crazy clown!
