Tucked in the hills of Los Altos, in the midst of the busy Bay Area rests a treasure. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), Los Altos Christian Schools offers a solid academic program, with consistently high test scores and experienced, credentialed teachers.

Bucking current education trends, LACS offers a full program that includes physical education, music, art, computer, library, chapel, and foreign language classes. Middle school curriculum includes courses in organization, community service, high school preparation, and electives such as digital photography and table tennis.

LACS is unique in a number of ways: it offers small class sizes, averaging 20 students per class; a full program, preschool through middle school; a learning assistance program, for students struggling with learning issues; and, according to parents and teachers, a close-knit community.

Academic rigor starts early, with second graders learning at the beginning of the school year about natural resources such as minerals, soil and wind; how to spell words such as metamorphic and igneous; and how to draw diagrams to solve multi-step math problems.

In addressing class size, middle school science teacher Charilyn Damigo said, “The small class size helps every child get full attention as they prepare for high school.” LACS graduates attend public and private college prep schools that include Valley Christian High School, The King’s Academy, and Bellarmine College Preparatory.

Brad Burman, an LACS PE teacher and coach for the past 13 years, believes in teaching perseverance. “If we can teach students that character is more important than performance, then when a student fails they’ll learn to get back up and try harder next time.” The P.E. curriculum includes street hockey, ultimate frisbee, soccer, futsal, baseball, football, basketball, volleyball, running, and personal fitness testing.

And LACS is a school with a heart, dedicated to shaping the Christian leaders of tomorrow with a curriculum that includes Bible coursework, weekly chapel, and Christian values woven into the entire curriculum. “When I’m spending this much time with the kids, I want to talk about God and Jesus, the important things of life,” said 3rd grade teacher Linda Garton, who’s taught for 22 years, 12 of them at LACS.

“How I found LACS was through my son’s own struggles with language arts,” said Dwin Graham, a former attorney who now teaches in LACS’s unique learning assistance program. She said she saw the disconnect with her son, now a first year college student. “Working with him gave me the passion to work with other kids who struggle in language arts. It also affirmed learning differences and intelligence are two separate things and each child is a wonderful creation.”

LACS parents Wendy and John Cadeddu, who have children in the 3rd, 6th and 8th grades, came across LACS while looking for a safe, well-rounded school where their kids would learn well. Wendy writes that, after her oldest was interviewed by now-principal Susan Goff, Mrs. Goff shook her son’s hand, looked him in the eyes, and said, “It would be a pleasure to welcome a well-spoken and polite young man like you.”

“At that moment I knew this was the right school for our family,” wrote Wendy. “That type of caring and sincerity never happened at our previous school. That moment for me was a gift from God after a long period of worrying about where our kids should be educated.”
